The Crime Genre
When someone think of a crime genre they probably think mostly about police and detectives, murders and other things that are associated with crimes. The crime genre usually feature scenes in the evening with low key lighting or in a high class area with overhead lighting and low key lighting. The shots that are used sometimes consist of quite a lot of close ups. This is because it creates tension for the audience.
My Chosen Sub-Genre

The sub-genre me and my group have chosen to do our opening sequence as the sub-genre of American Gangster. The conventions of this sub-genre generally include people that are high class Italian American's as a Mafia. The scenes mostly seem to be in a dark place or have low lighting for example, the opening sequence for The Godfather it starts with overhead lighting. (
Godfather Opening Scene) This creates tension for the viewer because they can't actually see what the character looks like. Another convention of American Gangster is being quite dominated by males. The costumes usually reflect the standing of a person or family in the Mafia or other characters for example, the don would wear a suit and probably have a red flower on the suit lapel. There is usually quite a lot of gun action used in an American Gangster film. A typical stereotype of this sub-genre would be a Mafia sitting around smoking cigars.
